This painting was born of a Martinican childhood spent observing nature with wide-open eyes.
New Earth
There are landscapes we've never seen, places that feel familiar even before we've set foot in them—as if something within us has always inhabited them.
This is where this canvas was born.
The passage
At the center of the composition, a passage at the foot of a towering cliff opens onto an unknown beyond. One can guess what lies hidden behind it, without actually seeing it. This is precisely where the tension of the work lies: in that space between what we perceive and what we imagine.
The sun is rising. Its rays graze the tops of the cliffs, setting them ablaze with a warm, almost surreal light. Below, a light mist still floats—the early morning mist that only waits to dissolve, like dew on leaves. Everything is both soft and intense. Calm and vibrant.
The colors, vivid and saturated, do not seek subtlety. They want you to feel something. Excitement. The call. And perhaps, also, a slight unease at this passage that is not yet known.
The intent
Growing up in Martinique means growing up with nature as both playground and language. The beaches, the cliffs, the rainforest, the mangroves – these landscapes are not just scenery. They are memories etched into the body. Every walk was an adventure for me, every path a promise of discovery.
And yet, there was always this question, lurking somewhere: "what if I took that path? The one I’ve never taken?"
This painting is my answer. It doesn't represent an existing place, far from it. It's the unexplored landscape that haunts the minds of those who grew up with their eyes wide open to the beauty of the world.
Painting this passage was giving myself permission to cross it.
